Harriet Tubman [1820 [approximate] - 1913] was born a slave in Maryland around 1820 (exact date unknown) and escaped to freedom in Philadelphia, PA, in 1849. Between 1850 and 1860, she made multiple trips back to Maryland to guide perhaps upwards of one hundred people, including her parents and several siblings, to freedom through the Underground Railroad network, earning her the nickname “Moses.” The knowledge she acquired on these trips enabled her to provide accurate intelligence data to the Union Army when she volunteered as a scout and a spy during the Civil War. After the war, Tubman became an outspoken advocate for African American and women’s rights.
