Amelia Earhart [1897 - 1939] was the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. As an associate editor of Cosmopolitan magazine, she campaigned for commercial air travel. Earhart disappeared in 1937 while trying to circumnavigate the globe from the equator. She was declared dead in 1939.
