Anne Frank [1929 – 1945] was a Jewish teenager who chronicled her family’s two years (1942–44) in hiding during the German occupation of the Netherlands during World War II. Her diary was first published in 1947, two years after Anne’s death in a concentration camp. Anne’s accounts of day-to-day life in The Secret Annex are a window into the boredom, tensions and fears of living in hiding from the Nazis, along with typical adolescent issues—jealousy toward her sister; annoyance with others, especially her mother; and an increasing sexual awareness. Her faithful commitment to her dream of being a writer has blessed the world with a valuable piece of historical literature.
