Barbara Bush [[1925 – 2018] became the Second Lady of the United States when her husband George H. W. Bush was Vice-President from 1981 – 1989, and First Lady thereafter (1989 – 1993). She was also her own person, with her own mission to improve the lives of ordinary people. After she discovered that one of her six children had dyslexia, she began her life-long campaign to increase literacy. She called eliminating the generational cycle of family illiteracy her most important issue. Her involvement in and support of many literacy organizations culminated in the founding of the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. Thirty years later, it continues her mission as the nation’s leading advocate for literacy. Mrs. Bush also expressed her own views on issues of national importance, including support for undocumented immigrants, a woman’s right to choose and LGBT rights.
