Cher [1946 - ] “I Got You Babe,” a 1967 mega million seller single record, jump-started the meteoric career of singing duo Sonny & Cher. But from the moment Cher (born Cherilyn Sarkisian in 1946 in El Centro, California) dropped “Sonny &” from her act — she and husband Sonny divorced in 1975 — she has pleased audiences world-wide with her solo recordings, concerts, stage shows and television appearances. The breadth of Cher’s solo career is all the more remarkable when coupled with its length. Breaking all stereotypes about the vanishing place for older women in the entertainment industry, Cher continues to earn millions with concerts tours, music recordings and movies. With a heart as big as her talent, Cher’s philanthropy is wide and deep. Support for children and families in need, soldiers and veterans, clean air and water, animal welfare and LGBT rights are among the worthy causes she has supported. Her response to COVID-19 is the co-creation of the CherCares Pandemic Resource and Response Fund to provide needed supplies and support to those exposed to the disease.
