Coretta Scott King [1927 - 2006] Coretta Scott King was an American author, activist and civil rights leader. When her husband, Martin Luther King, Jr., was assassinated in 1968, she continued as a leader of the civil rights movement in her own right and traveled throughout the world speaking out on behalf of racial and economic justice. In 1968 King established the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change. It’s stated purpose was to both honor Dr. King and carry out educational and community programs to continue his efforts.
