Gloria Steinem [1934 - ] is an American feminist icon. As social activist, author, editor and lecturer, she is an outspoken champion of women's rights. Since the 1960s, she has led marches and toured the country speaking out for the cause. She helped create both New York and Ms. magazines and helped form the National Women's Political Caucus, which supports gender equality and works to elect more pro-equality women to public office. Other organizations Steinem has co-founded include the Women’s Action Alliance, the Women’s Media Center, Voters for Choice and the Ms. Foundation for Women. In 2013, President Barack Obama presented her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the highest civilian honor.
