Katie Sowers [1986 - ] made history as the second female full-time coach in NFL history in 2016 and the first openly lesbian coach. Initially excelling in college sports—soccer, basketball, and track—Sowers returned to her passion for football after facing discrimination as a volunteer assistant coach. Her football journey began in the Women's Football Alliance, where she helped the U.S. national team win a gold medal at the Women's World Championships in 2013.
In 2020, Sowers served as an offensive assistant coach for the San Francisco 49ers during their Super Bowl season. Currently, she is coaching for the Kansas City Chiefs, participating in the 2024 season as a coaching intern. Sowers remains a strong advocate for inclusivity in sports and has led her team, Ottawa, to multiple national championships in women's flag football. Through her work and activism, she continues to inspire future generations of athletes and coaches.
