Mother Teresa (Mother Mary Teresa Bojaxhiu) [1910 - 1997], was an Albanian-Indian Roman Catholic nun and missionary. She became famous for her humble ministry to lepers, the homeless and the poorest of the poor in the slums of Calcutta, India. In 1950, she founded the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic religious congregation of (as of 2013) over 4,500 nuns in 133 countries who serve the sick and impoverished. Mother Teresa was awarded many honors, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize and the Presidential Medal of Freedom from the United States in 1985. She was canonized by Pope Francis in 2016 as St. Teresa of Calcutta.
