Rachel Carson [1907 – 1964] was an American marine biologist, author and conservationist whose writings on environmental pollution and the natural history of the sea alerted the world to the environmental impact of fertilizers and pesticides. Her best-known book Silent Spring (1962) spurred a reversal in national pesticide policy, and led to a nationwide ban on DDT for agricultural uses, inspiring an environmental movement that led to the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
